Let’s talk about something that affects every online course—student retention. The truth is, it’s not just a student issue. It’s a design issue, an instructor issue, and a support issue. If students feel isolated or lost, they’re more likely to disengage. First up: course design. If navigation is clunky or expectations are unclear, students quickly lose motivation. Intuitive layouts, clear deadlines, and easy-to-find resources remove barriers and help students stay engaged. Well-structured courses set the foundation for success. Next: instructor presence. A strong, active presence can transform an online course from isolated screen time to a connected learning experience. Weekly touch-points—whether discussion posts, video check-ins, or personalized feedback—build trust and keep students engaged. Instructors don’t have to be online 24/7, but they do need to be visible and accessible. Finally: student support. Learning alone can be tough, so meaningful connections are key. Micro-check-ins from instructors and built-in peer discussions can help students connect. It’s also essential that institutions maintain strong institution-wide support structures such as student success, advising, student activities, mental health, and financial aid to help prevent someone from falling behind. Support matters more than we think!
