VLOG: Spotting AI Generated Student Work—Without a Detector

Ever read a student paper and feel something’s… off? It’s polished, pristine, and oddly formal, like it rolled off a robot’s keyboard. Look for suspiciously perfect grammar, a robotic cadence, and work that’s suddenly way more polished than before. If your last-minute essay student suddenly channels Shakespeare, it’s worth a second look. Before jumping to conclusions, investigate calmly.
- Compare the student’s past writing.
- Check if the references are real and match the citations.
- Ask simple clarifying questions: ‘Tell me about your thesis,’ or ‘What was your research process?’
- Pinpoint where AI might have been used and guide the student to see where it made mistakes
AI isn’t going anywhere, so let’s focus on integrity over fear. Teach students to use AI ethically—brainstorming, editing, not outsourcing thinking. Use writing portfolios to track growth, reflections to explain their process, and encourage critical thinking. Students need AI skills for the future, and we can help them use these tools with integrity.
